External Valuations

External valuations are figures which are external to DECAF. It means, for example:

  1. For mandates: Valuation figures from the custodian, and
  2. For funds: Validated NAV and NAV/share figures from the fund administrator.

DECAF can store external valuations for portfolios and funds. Users can use such data for reference purposes. However, such data is more functional than it seems and even required in some cases such as:

  1. For mandates:
    1. If portfolio has been active for a much longer time than it appears in the system, DECAF uses external valuations for adjusting performance series.
    2. If a portfolio is supposed to follow "NAV/share" methodology but after a certain cut-off date, such cut-off date is marked via an external valuation.
  2. For funds:
    1. If a fund does not have historical data but only has past validated NAV and NAV/share figures, the last external valuation figure (or last N external valuation figures depending on accrual schedule dates) must be keyed in so that system can start calculating correct NAV, share count and NAV/share figures along with correct performance fees.
    2. If a fund is administrated by an external party, there may be some discrepencies between administrator's and DECAF's figures due to factors such as different price sources or methodologies. However small they could be, over time the discrepency might grow big. Administrator's validated figures can be keyed in to the system as external valuations so that DECAF knows, for example, which NAV/share figure it should use for the basis of performance calculations.

Users can key-in external valuations on the portfolio details page under "External" tab. Alternatively, users can fill in our Microsoft Excel file template and send to the dedicated Inbox address in case they want to import or update large number of external valuations:
